Description

While Lemosho route is the oldest and most well established route, Marangu is the classic route up the Mountain. It is also known as the “Coca cola route”. Its well-developed paths and gentle ascent makes this route popular with less experienced mountain hikers.

It is the most crowded route because the ascent and descent are done on the same path. Marangu is highly favored only during the rainy season, where the hut accommodations are preferred. It is also the only route which offers sleeping huts in dormitory style.

The Kibo Hut is usually reached in about 5-6 hours. Here you will enjoy an early evening meal followed by an early night, as the night will be short. (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner).

Day 5: Kibo Hut (4700m) – Uhuru Peak (5895m) – Horombo Hut (3700m)

Day 5 is a great day – Summit day! It begins at night because the lava ash is still frozen and so the ascent is easier. At midnight you will begin your summit journey. Passing the Hans Meyer Cave at (5220m), the climb slowly but surely ascends. At sunrise, you will reach Gillman’s point (5681m) the crater rim of Kilimanjaro – where the sun will start to warm up the land. You quickly forget the coldness of the night and will reach the Uhuru Peak at 5895m in another 1-2 hours. You will have a moment to celebrate your summiting then descend back using the same route. The lava ash will now have thawed, which allows for a fast descend. On return to Kibo Hut you will have hot lunch and rest for an hour or more. Then continue to Horombo Hut where you will arrive in the afternoon. You will have early dinner and retire to a nice sleep. (Snacks, Lunch and Dinner).
