Description

While Lemosho route is the oldest and most well established route, Marangu is the classic route up the Mountain. It is also known as the “Coca cola route”. Its well-developed paths and gentle ascent makes this route popular with less experienced mountain hikers.

It is the most crowded route because the ascent and descent are done on the same path. Marangu is highly favored only during the rainy season, where the hut accommodations are preferred. It is also the only route which offers sleeping huts in dormitory style.

After breakfast, general briefing and equipment check, we will drive through Kilimanjaro on its East side. After 3-4 hours of drive through small villages, you will reach the park entrance. Once done with formalities your journey begins. You will pass through cultivated fields then pine forest into the light rainforest. You will overnight at Simba Camp which has a beautiful landscape and offer a view of Kibo. (Lunch and Dinner).

2

Day 2: Simba Camp (2625m) – Second Cave Camp (3450m)

Today you will cross both heath and moorland landscapes. In good weather you will have view of Savannah. Around mid-day you will reach Second Cave Camp where you will spend a night. After lunch, you can take a short hike towards the Third Cave – this supports your acclimatization. (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner).

Day 3: Second Cave Camp (3450m) – Kikelewa Camp (3650m)

Today we will continue upward towards Kikelewa Camp. The Camp is located in a protected sink surrounded by Senecas. You will arrive around noon and have plenty of time to explore the surrounding area and enjoy the view. (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner).

Day 4: Kikelewa Camp (3650m) – Mawenzi Tarn Hut (4330m)

This morning we have a short but steep ascent up grassy slopes which is rewarded by a superb view of the Kenyan plains to the North. We leave vegetation behind shortly before reaching your next Camp –  Mawenzi Tarn Hut directly before the towering cliffs of Mawenzi. This afternoon you have chance to rest or explore the surrounding area to aid acclimatization. (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner).

5

Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn Hut (4330m) – Kibo Hut (4700m)

You will leave your Campsite and cross the lunar desert of the ‘saddle’ between Mawenzi and Kibo. After trekking for a few hours you will reach the spectacular view with the Summit of Kilimanjaro in the background and our trail to the high Camp stretched out before your eyes. Upon arrival to your Camp you will have a rest while preparing for the final ascent after a very early night.

6

Day 6: Kibo Hut (4700m) – Uhuru Peak (5895m) – Horombo Hut (3700m)

Day 6 is “The Big Day” – the Summit stage. You will begin your ascent around midnight which will be long and strenuous. Passing the Hans Meyer Cave (5220m), the climb slowly but surely goes upwards.  At sunrise, you will reach Gillman’s point (5681m) – the crater rim of Kilimanjaro where the sun will slowly start to warm up. You will have your lunch and rest before proceeding back down to Horombo Hut. (Snacks, Lunch and Dinner).

7

Day 7: Horombo Hut (3700m) – Marangu Gate (1860m) – Hotel

The final day passes through the heath and moorland to the Mandara Hut (2700m), where you will enjoy lunch with views of rainforest. After your break, you will continue your walk through the tropical rainforest. After 6 hours, you will arrive back to the entrance of the national Park. You will have time to say goodbye to your mountain crew. After a self-retreat at the Hotel, you will be presented with a summit certificate by your guide.  (Breakfast).
